FAQs

Sandboxed or not Sandboxed

Q: Some applications are available also on Mac App Store. Which are the differences between the Mac App Store and the DSP-Quattro Store versions?

A:

Q: Which is the difference between a SANDBOXED  application and an application which is NOT SANDBOXED?

A: without being too technical, a SANDBOXED application runs in a protected, more secure and closed environment - or container - created specifically for it by MacOS.

Conversely, an application which is not sandboxed has a direct visibility of MacOS file system.

Seen with a practical point of view, if an application AND a plug-in are both designed to be sandboxed, everything is ok. Problems arise  if a plug-in which is not “sandbox-compatible”, maybe because it was designed time ago, is loaded into a sandboxed host, because it may happen that the plug-in looks for its own files (like internal presets, copy protection and others) in the wrong place. In this case the sandboxed host cannot give it the visibility of the real MacOS file system, and folders may be different than what the plug-in is looking for.

IN ONE WORD: if you are going to purchase an audio application in Mac Apple Store and if you want to use any plug-in with it, FIRST be sure that the plug-ins are compatible with a sandboxed host.

Q: How to know if a plug-in is compatible with a sandboxed host?

A: ask to the Company selling that plug-in. If for any reason this is not possible, simply load it into Garage Band, which is a sandboxed application. If the plug-in is visible and runs properly in Garage Band, it is sandbox-compatible.

Q: My plug-in runs properly hosted by Logic. Does it mean that the plug-in is sandbox-compatible?

A: No, it doesn’t. At moment of writing, Logic, even if on Mac App Store, is NOT sandboxed.

Registering

Q: I have purchased a license from DSP-Quattro Store, how to authorise the DEMO version?

A: The DEMO version cannot be authorised. As soon as you purchase a license, you will receive an activation code to use when registering into our User Area, where you will then find the full version of the application.

Q: I have purchased a license from DSP-Quattro Store, can use DSP-Quattro on more than one computer?

A: YES, you can. The license is single owner, not single installation. The only limitation is that it is for your personal use only.

Technical

Q: Which MacOS version do DSP-Quattro v5, DSP-AudioEditor and DSP-AudioCDBuilder need at minimum?

A: MacOS 10.11 (El Capitain).

Q: Are DSP-Quattro v5, DSP-AudioEditor and DSP-AudioCDBuilder  compatible with MacOS 11 (Big Sur) or 12 (Monterey)?

A: YES they are. They are Universal Applications, run natively at full speed on Intel and M1 based Macs. Please consider also that, if you use third party AU plug-ins or external audio devices, you must be sure that also these are compatible with MacOS 11 Big Sur or newer.

Q: Do DSP-Quattro v5, DSP-AudioEditor and DSP-AudioCDBuilder need any additional software to import/export mp3 audio file?

A: NO, it is not necessary to install any additional software. These applications use a built-in internal mp3 encoder to export as mp3.

Q: Can DSP-Quattro v5 load projects or AudioCDLayouts saved by previous versions of DSP-Quattro?

A: NO, it can’t. Too many things changed between DSP-Quattro v5 and its previous versions, it was impossible to keep the compatibility. And, last but not least, previous versions of DSP-Quattro were using libraries of MacOS which are not available anymore into the current Apple SDK used to build DSP-Quattro v5.

Q: What can I do if I need to work again on a project saved by a previous version of DSP-Quattro?

A: Export  the audioCDLayout as DDP using v4 of DSP-Quattro, then import in v5 still as DDP. This has not the same effect of loading the same project in v5, but guarantees some compatibility.

Q: Can DSP-AudioEditor and DSP-AudioCDBuilder load a Project saved by DSP-Quattro v5?

A: YES, they can.

Q: A client asked to play the DDP which I have produced using DSP-Quattro. How to do it without having to pay a third party DDP player?

A: Use the DEMO version of DSP-Quattro or DSP-AudioCDBuilder. These DEMO versions are not able to export a DDP, but they are able to import a DDP. And, of course, they can play it. The DEMO version is not time limited, your client can use it as long as he needs. DEMO versions are the perfect DDP players, for free.

Q: DSP-Quattro and DSP-AudioCDBuilder warn me when I input a CD-Text which is longer than 32 characters. Is it mandatory?

A: No, it is not. However, it is safer to keep CD-Texts shorter than 32 characters. The maximum limit for the length of CDTexts is really an open issue, the standard is not clear about that, except that there is a limit on the total size reserved to CD-Texts on an Audio CD-ROM. There are several technical documents, someone claims that YES, it is safer to keep each CD-Text length to lower than 32 characters.

Q: If I burn an Audio CD-ROM using DSP-Quattro or DSP-AudioCDBuilder, when I insert the CD back into my Mac, all CD-Track Titles and CD-Texts are gone. How is it possible?

A: MacOS X does not read the CD-Texts on inserted Audio CD-ROM by default. Even iTunes does not. iTunes connects to the Gracenote database on internet to get AudioCD track titles,  and save them into an internal database. Then, the MacOS finder uses the same database.

Using MacOS, there is a command from the terminal window (it is an Utility in the Application/Utility folder) which you can use to verify the CD-Texts and ISRC/PQ codes on audio CDs. Here's how to check CD-Texts:

- Insert your CD into your Mac, open Terminal and type:

drutil cdtext

- press the Return key.  The CD-Text data will be displayed if it's there. To know more about this, read here.

Q: I have a previous version of MacOS. Would be it possible to install a previous version of DSP-Quattro which runs on it, if I purchase a license of DSP-Quattro version 5?

A: Yes it is. There are several previous versions of DSP-Quattro, they runs on all older versions of MacOS, starting even from MacOS 9. Of course, they are are limited in features and they are not supported anymore, but they are available upon request to our support after purchasing a license of DSP-Quattro v5.

Plug-ins Hosting

Q: Which kind of plug-in can DSP-Quattro v5, DSP-AudioEditor and DSP-AudioCDBuilder  host?

A: 64 bits Effects and Instruments Audio Unit (AU).

Q: I have Logic installed. Why do not I see its internal plug-ins, like Amp Designer or Alchemy, into your applications?

A: The internal Effects and Instruments of Logic X are reserved to Apple ONLY.

Out applications are able to host third party Audio Unit plug-ins installed on your MacOS system.  Unfortunately the internal Fx and virtual instruments of Logic are not available to applications other than Logic and other applications  done by Apple itself as Main Stage.

Technically, an host asks to MacOS the list of the installed AU plug-ins, and those plug-ins are simply invisible. It happens not only using our hosts, it happens to all the other MacOS AudioUnit hosts, too.

Q: Are your applications able to load VST plug-ins?

A: No, They are not.  Being our applications designed only for a MacOS, we have considered that the capability to host plug-in in Audio Unit (AU) format covers almost the 100% of the third party plug-in market.

Others

Q: Does your Company grant Educational discounts?

A: YES, we do. Please contact our support to know more about Educational discounts.

Q: Are there any video tutorials on using your applications on YouTube?

A: YES, there are.  This the official YouTube channel

Q: I have heard some rumors about someone of you doing Spark for TC-Works several years ago. I loved that application. Is it true?

A: Yes it is.  It was a great experience, an incredible adventure. Great team, very good friends.
